Determine if a process is not responding and kill it / restart it?

I run a few applications on my nodes that occasionally crash. I would like to be able to know if they have crashed/aren't responding and kill them programmatically or via a button on the component view. I think this is possible through the real time process explorer. Ideally I'd like to restart it.
Is there a way I can do this through SAM or should I roll my own application for the nodes?
