For me, as weird as this may sound – is cabling. When I am running WAN circuits for customers, I try to use color-sheathed fiber for the connections. An example would be a NY-CA circuit I have used Red SM fiber on both sides. For a NY-TX circuit, I used Blue for both sides. If ever the time comes to have some work done, I can say unplug the blue fiber and know that they are looking at the right cable.
